Objective of “Forests for the Future Project in Thailand”
  ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
In the last century, we have lost 80% of the world primeval forest. Furthermore, per every second, we are losing forests equivalent to the area of a football field around the world. Forests are the center of the ecosystem. They create and support life through production of oxygen and water. Forests nourish soil, and the nourishments flow into oceans through rivers to nurture life in the sea. The decrease of forests means the loss of CO2 absorber and causes acceleration of the global warming.

In order to preserve the rich and beautiful forests to the future generations, we, Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE) has been promoting
“Forests for the Future Project”, which is the tree-planting campaign by children around the world. We launched the project in 2002 in Lhasa (Tibet), that is in 3,800 meters above the sea level, jointly with DESA (Department of Economic and Social Affairs) of U.N., the China Guanzai Committee (U.N.NGO) and the Tibetan Autonomous Government. In 2003, we started “Forests for the Future project in Kenya” targeting to plant one million trees, jointly with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In four years, we have already planted 420,000 trees in total with more than 30,000 Kenyan children from 200 schools throughout Kenya.

To encourage such valuable tree-planting activities worldwide, in 2007, UNEP is carrying out a special tree planting campaign, named
“Plant for the Planet - The Billion Tree Campaign”. In this special occasion, as one of the major activities of the campaign, FGPE planned to organize the special tree planting program in the Kingdom of Thailand, jointly with UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok as well as with Thai Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment.

The main purpose of the project is to bring back rich forests in Thailand where forests have been reducing rapidly, together with Thai children, local people, volunteers and corporate patrons. The tree planting in Sirindhorn International Environmental Park patronaged by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn, will be the major activity, which is supervised by the Thai Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment. The year of 2007 is the 120th anniversary Japan - Thailand diplomatic relations, so we would like to involve Japanese private sectors and citizens to support and take part this special project.

We would like to encourage Thai children and people concern about the global environment through participation in the actual tree-planting activities, and to enhance young people to contribute for preserving their beautiful homeland for future generations.
